Over the years Derek fought many battles in regards to his health but he never let that hold him back. Derek always managed to succeed in the face of adversary. He was there when you needed help, and his love for family and friends always came first. Derek had a passion for tinkering with small engines, hunting and fishing. His most loved past times were always being at family functions, where he would always be found playing with all the kids, spending time at his uncle's farm, or sitting beside a fire. One of the greatest joys in his life would be the times he spent with his niece and nephew, whether it was playing cars or building lego, he was always the first one they would ask to play. When you first met Derek it was his great sense of humour and infectious laugh that would draw you to him. After you spent more time with him all his other attributes came shining through.
