It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Dmytro (Matt) Kowalchuk, who died peacefully on December 4, 2025 at the age of 85 with his daughter by his side. A proud Ukrainian-Canadian and a lifelong farmer, Matt leaves behind a legacy rooted in hard work, tradition and an unwavering connection to nature and God.
Matt was born on the family homestead, located in Harrison Park, to Frank and Katie Kowalchuk on May 11th 1940. Growing up, Matt was always adventurous and creative in everything he did. He began working at a young age as a farmhand and further on, building roads in Northern Canada, and for Strathclair Municipality. He married Joanne Tesarski on 12th November 1966 and later had their daughter Julie. Matt saved money from working, trapping, and renting farmland in order to purchase his own plot of land and more farm equipment. He continued to grow his farm with the help of his family throughout the years.
Outside of his work, Matt had a passion for hunting, bringing home everything from ducks to the occasional moose. Music was a big part of Matt’s life, you could always find him with a fiddle or guitar in hand, especially when the whole family got together. He was also a dedicated member of the Dolyny Church throughout his life.
Matt is predeceased by his parents, Frank Kowalchuk, Katie Kowalchuk; and sister-in-law, Gloria Kowalchuk.
Matt is survived by his wife, Joanne Kowalchuk; his brothers Myron Kowalchuk (Lynn Fron) Michael Kowalchuk; his sister, Margaret (Steve) Novalkowski; and his daughter Julie (Brian) Parley. Matt also leaves behind his grandchildren Lauren Parley and Braden Parley.
Till we meet again, may God bless you as he has blessed me.
