It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Allen Bowles, who passed away at 1:00 a.m. on July 7, 2026, at Minnedosa Hospital, one month after celebrating his 91st birthday.
Doug was born on June 8, 1935, in Souris, Manitoba, to Rita and Allen Bowles. He spent his childhood growing up on the family farm, where he lived until he was 18 years old. He then began a long and dedicated career with Manitoba Hydro, serving as a Control Operator for more than 30 years. Doug retired at the young age of 50 and embraced retirement with the same enthusiasm and curiosity that defined his life.
Following retirement, Doug and Irma retired to live on the farm north of Strathclair, Manitoba. There, he devoted countless hours to the hobbies he loved most. An accomplished amateur (ham) radio operator, Doug connected with people from around the world and earned numerous achievements and awards for his dedication to the hobby.
Doug was also a talented artist whose creativity shone through his drawings, paintings, and wildlife photography. He had a deep appreciation for nature and found joy in capturing its beauty. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey and boxing. He was proud to have been a sparring partner of heavyweight boxer Rocky Addison.
Doug was the proud father of three sons: Delwin Allen Bowles, Gordon Albert Bowles, and Timothy Andrew Bowles. Later in life, he married the love of his life, Irma Evelyn Bowles, and lovingly welcomed her daughter, Teresa Wanda Smith, into his family. Doug and Irma retired to live on the farm north of Strathclair, Manitoba, where they enjoyed many years together. Irma passed away on June 30, 2012, and Doug later made his home in Strathclair, where he enjoyed his later years surrounded by family and friends.
Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irma, and is survived by his sons, Delwin, Gordon, and Timothy; his stepdaughter, Teresa; and his cherished grandchildren: Amanda Bowles and Bradley Bowles (children of Delwin); Sarah Ledoux (née Bowles), Quinton Bowles, and Parker Bowles (children of Gordon); Samantha Bowles (daughter of Timothy); and Jason Lang, Jenna Smith, and Julia Smith (children of Teresa).
Doug will be remembered for his quiet strength, his sharp mind, his artistic talent, his love of learning, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether through a radio signal reaching across the globe, a painting inspired by nature, or time spent with those he loved, Doug left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
His family will forever cherish the memories they shared with him and will carry his love, wisdom, and gentle spirit in their hearts.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
