Edgar Alan Betton

It is with great sadness that Alan and I announce the passing of our Father and Brother, Edgar Alan Betton. Alan Sr. passed on Wednesday September 24th 2025 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his sister Sandra, his son Alan and the light of his life, his grand-daughter Rhaya. Alan was pre-deceased by his wife Carol.

Alan was born in Pietersburg (now Polokwane) South Africa in 1952 to Alan and Joan Betton of Koningskroon Farm, Tzaneen District. Alan spent most of his life on the ocean. In 1962, the family set sail from Cape Town on a 60ft sailing yacht and returned to the farm after being dismasted in a hurricane while attempting to cross the Atlantic. In 1970, the family set sail from Durban, this time in a 40ft home made boat. After a 2-year adventure, the family washed up in British Columbia where Alan met the love of his life and future wife, Carol. Alan qualified as a naval architect and, together with Carol, ran a successful yacht surveying business on Saltspring Island before retiring to Sandy Lake.

My big brother was my protector, confidante and friend. I will always remember sitting on the dock in Durban fishing with the left-over kidney beans from Mom’s stew and his joy at our success – or perhaps it at the consternation of the “real” fishermen whose bait couldn’t beat Mom’s leftovers! I will miss him.

The family would like to thank his doctors and nurses, especially those at the Minnedosa Care Center for the care you gave during his final few weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you get any suspicious moles checked promptly.
