Elsie Spitula passed away peacefully at the Minnedosa District Hospital on December 27, 2025, after a long and wonderful life.
She will be sadly missed by her children: Walter (Pat), (Marianne), Dennis (Debbie), and Greg (Jody); her grandchildren: Sharla (Brent), Tara (Chris), Jay (Giada), Rhea (Geoff), Pam (Graham), Marisa, Riley, and Jordyn (Garret); and her great grandchildren: Mya, Chase, Ali, Kinlee, Hazel, Reggie, Tex, Savannah, Joshua, and Hailey.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Harry, son Edward, great grandson Jax, parents Wes and Nellie Prokopchuk, sisters Phyllis, Betty, and Carrie, and brothers Jake, Sid, Walter, Peter, and Paul.
Elsie was born on January 1, 1935, to Wes and Nellie Prokopchuk on a farm in the Sandy Lake area. She spent her younger years helping out on the farm and attending Sandy Lake School. In 1953 she married the love of her life, Harry Spitula, and together they continued to farm as their family grew, adding four wonderful boys to the mix. In 1985 they built a new house in the town of Sandy Lake and relocated. Harry passed away in 2013, and Elsie continued living in their Sandy Lake home until her passing.
Elsie spent countless hours being involved in the community. She was a part of the Women's League for more than 60 years. Elsie and Harry were also both caretakers of the credit union and Sandy Lake Co-Op.
Elsie loved to play bingo on Friday nights at the Sandy Lake hall and in her later years she played at the Drop In Centre. Her favourite pastime was to do the Word Search books. Both Elsie and Harry enjoyed spending time with their friends while on U S casino trips, and Elsie continued going on these trips even after Harry passed away.
Elsie cherished when her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would visit, filling the house with chaos, laughter, and love. She appreciated when family came by to help with chores around her house and always made sure not only to have pickles and perogies ready to eat, but also a jar and a bag for them to go home with. Elsie took great pride in planting a garden every year, a garden that was so big it consumed the entire backyard of her house. She loved to use these vegetables to make her amazing borscht, perogies, perishke, beet leaf holupchi, and of course, her pickles.
The family would like to thank the kind staff at Minnedosa District Hospital for taking care of our beloved Mom and Baba during the final months of her life.
She will be deeply missed by all of her friends, relatives, and especially by her family.
