Ernest Malchuk of Sandy Lake, Manitoba passed away on March 15, 2021 at his residence at the age of 91 years.
Ernest was born on January 12, 1930 on the farm one-mile North East of Horod, Manitoba. Ernie, which everyone called him attended school at Horod and Elphinstone. He purchased Elphinstone Transfer in 1951 and hauled livestock to St. Boniface stockyards and general freight back from Winnipeg for six years. In 1956, he sold the business and moved to Brandon. Ernie then worked for Modern Dairies delivering milk door to door with horse and wagon for three years. In 1965, he moved back to the farm and farmed with his two brothers Walter and Theodore for six years. He then purchased the Sandy Lake Hotel, which he operated until 1977. Ernie also drove a school bus for Rolling River School Division for twelve years, all the while being the Reeve for the R.M. of Harrison for four- three year terms. He was also a cantor in the Ukrainian Catholic Church since 1967 and had the honour of being a cantor for twenty-two different Priests and Bishops. He sang in about twenty-one different churches from Brandon to Dauphin as well as the surrounding area. Ernie very much enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and belonging to and working on numerous organizations. He especially enjoyed the many visits with his grandchildren, Brennan, Taylen and Sierra teaching them about history, gardening and playing crib or card games with them.
Ernie was predeceased by his father John, mother Annie, brothers: Stanley, Theodore, and Walter.
Surviving are his son, Darren (Stefanie) Malchuk of Portage la Prairie and their children: Sierra, Brennan and Taylen; daughter Beverly Hale-Malchuk of Merritt, B.C. and her son Jordan; sisters, Olive Kowalchuk, Elsie Kowalchuk and Stella Shindruk.
A funeral Service was held Friday, March 19, 2021 from the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sandy Lake with Father Jay Korban officiating. Interment followed in the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Horod, Manitoba. Pallbearers were Brennan Malchuk, Kevin Kowalchuk, Blair Kowalchuk, Harvey Shindruk, Lloyd Huculak and Barry Zahodnik.
