Winston was born on May 19, 1941 to George and Irene Ruddick of Shoal Lake. He had one brother, Charles. He attended Shoal Lake School and resided his whole life in Shoal Lake, Manitoba.
During School and after, Winston enjoyed curling. He enjoyed playing hockey and later enjoyed coaching his son’s hockey team.
Winston was a perfectionist at work and at home. Each vehicle he owned was precious to him and had to be spotless.
On September 9, 1967 Winston married Patricia Gallagher from McCreary. By May 15, 1971 a daughter Kristin Roberta came to join them. A son, Kevin Patrick came to round off their family on July 11, 1973.
Winston first started working for Wilf Chegwin Construction Ltd. when he was 19 as a bookkeeper. He continued to do the same work when the company changed hands to Crush-Rite Concrete. In 1990, Winston changed jobs, working for the Department of Education, Pupil Transportation Division in Rivers, Manitoba. Winston retired in Dec. 2006. Winston also served as People’s Warden for 17 years at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Shoal Lake. Another pastime was shuttling vehicles for Woodworth Dodge in Kenton and Shoal Lake. Winston also coached his son’s hockey team for 6 years.
Pat and Winston enjoyed traveling throughout their married life, their first trip being to Expo ‘67 in Montreal and Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. This was followed by years of camping. Some major family trips were to Disney World, Florida, Badlands and Mount Rushmore, South Dakota and Expo ‘86 in B.C. for their 25th Anniversary in 1992. They went to the Grand Canyon, Arizona and saw the Redwoods in California. In 1997, it was off to four of the Hawaiian islands, enjoying every minute! 2000 took them to the Maritime provinces, seeing the “Tall Ships” in Halifax Harbour and Confederation Bridge to P.E.I. Other trips were to Vancouver Island and Playa Del Carman and the Mayan ruins.
Retirement came December 31, 2006. 2007 and 2008 winters were spent in New Mexico and Arizona. After 2 years in Texas, Pat and Winston decided to buy a small place in Donna , Texas where 10 years of winters were spent making new friends and meeting up with old Manitoba friends - until Covid came along!
Winston was predeceased by his parents, George and Irene and also his brother Charles. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughter Kristin (James) and son Kevin (Monica). He is also survived by his grandchildren Travis, Trent and Tanner, Natalie and Tyler; great grandchildren Brielle and Colton, Nathan and cousin Charles Ruddick in North Vancouver.
Winston will be greatly missed.
