Leona Prokopowich Obituary

Leona peacefully passed away on March 28th, 2025, with family by her side at the Minnedosa Hospital. She was 81 years of age. She was born on April 10th, 1943, in Sandy Lake to Donald and Jean Billeck. Her roots were well planted in Sandy Lake where she went to school, worked and raised her family. On October 6th, 1962, she married Michael Prokopowich. Leona’s first job was as a telephone switchboard operator in Newdale. She then took a position at the Sandy Lake Credit Union, where she worked for over 20 years. She then joined the Personal Care Home in Sandy Lake until her retirement. Leona was an avid curler with her friends over the years and an equally passionate curling fan, never missing a game on TV. She was predeceased by her husband Mike in 1996 and both her parents. Leona is survived by her two brothers Edmund (Rose) Billeck and Ted (Lexi) Billeck. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Marcella (Alan) Dixon and Lee (Dar) Prokopowich and her adoring three grandsons, Riley (Talia) Dixon, Logan Dixon, and Jared Dixon. A very special thank you to all the Staff at the Minnedosa Hospital for all their wonderful care and kindness that you showed our Mother. As per her wishes, a private family service will be held on April 3rd at Rae's Funeral Chapel, Shoal Lake with burial following at the Sandy Lake Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.

“God called your name so softly,

that only you could hear

and no one heard the footsteps,

Of angels drawing near.

The Golden Gates stood open,

God saw you needed rest

His garden must be beautiful

He only takes the best.”
