Leona Frances Yanyk passed away on October 11 at Russell District Health Centre at the age of 80 years old.
Leona was born on June 10, 1944 in Russell Manitoba the first child of Tom and Susan Charney.
Leona grew up on the family farm in the Marco district, this is where her love for farming began.
After her schooling she soon started her own journey in life. She worked at a diner in Shoal Lake and this was where she met her husband Eugene. They were married September 25, 1965 and after their wedding they settled on the homestead of Yanyk Farms.
Life was not easy in those days. Leona cared for her in-laws for 13 years until their passing. Leona was an extremely hard worker, from having a garden that could feed a small army, to raising hundreds of chickens, to milking cows, feeding all the men and raising her children. She was most content in the kitchen, cooking amazing meals for everyone and anyone, was one of the biggest passions she had. She was most happiest when her children and grandchildren were around. They brought her the most joy.
Leona was predeceased by her parents Tom and Susan Charney, her in-laws John and Ann Yanyk brothers Ken and Rick, brother-in-law Orest, as well as many aunts, uncles, brother and sisters-in-law and cousins.
Leona is survived by her husband of 59 years Eugene, her children Eugenia (Sheldon), Johnny (Cindy), Reinadia (Raymond), Maryann (John), Stephen (Vicki). Grandchildren Stephanie (Dominic), Joshua (Kaitlin), Jeremy (Shaan),Jordan (Megan), Sadie (Ryan),Danielle (Zac),Anthony (Nicole), Mason (Jamie), Logan (Laura) Tessa, great grand children Isaiah, Hayden, Levi, Layne, Jaxon and baby due November 10! She is also survived by her sisters Zelma, Betty (Ed) brothers Eddy (Phyllis), Matthew (Judy), many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. El hajj, and the staff at Russell Hospital! Special thanks to the home care workers and the nurses that took care of Leona for many years.
