Mary Ternovetsky passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia on September 3, 2021, at the Rossburn Health Centre, at the age of 93.
Mary was born on April 5,1928 to Harry and Irene Baydak in Rossburn, Manitoba. She was predeceased by all eight of her siblings: Martha, Anne, Steve, Nellie, Mabel, John, Irene and Bill. Mary was also predeceased by her husband Mike, daughter Patricia and son Lloyd. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Murray and Patricia Ternovetsky, son- in-law Tom Ziolkoski, daughter-in-law Susan Nadeau, and her grandchildren Adam (Stacy), Daniel (Collette), Murray (Kelly), Michael (Julia), Julie (Josh) and Trevor (Apryl). She also is survived by 16 great- grandchildren.
Mary grew up on a farm north of Rossburn, and we believe that she met her husband Mike at a dance in town. They were married on January 29, 1948. They lived on the family farm for their first year of marriage. They went to Brantford, Ontario to stay with an ailing relative, but were promptly summoned by family to return. In 1949 Mike decided to take a barbering course in Winnipeg, while Mary worked in a sewing factory. After a short stint in Waskada, Manitoba, they returned to Rossburn where they purchased a house on Main Street. Mary resided there until she was no longer able to live on her own.
Mary was a hard worker, looking after her family, her home and garden. She baked cakes and made perogies for sale, babysat, did custom knitting and cut and styled hair. She also did paint and staining work for Komhyr Construction. In the early 1970’s Mary was employed as the custodian’s assistant at Rossburn Collegiate, eventually bidding and receiving the contract herself (after the retirement of Sterling Veitch). Mary was able to hire Mike as her helper. The thought of Mary being Mike’s “boss” made us all chuckle!
We would like to thank the staff and nurses at the Rossburn Health Centre for the wonderful care and support she received during her lengthy stay as her health continued to deteriorate. All the staff have been excellent to work with, never hesitating to update the family with any changes. During her last days of life especially, Mary was treated with the utmost dignity and respect.
