Nellie Marion (Drozda) Gapka

Surrounded by her family, Nellie Gapka passed away at the Hamiota Health Centre on November 2, 2020.

Nellie was born on July 15, 1928 to Mike and Mary (Bucklaschuk) Drozda.   She attended Bryd School for her primary years and completed High School in Rossburn. She then went on to teach at Bryd School as a Permit Teacher.  Nellie left her employment to tend to her mother’s failing health. She later was employed at the Rossburn Coop grocery store. 

On November 13, 1951, Nellie married Bill Gapka. They spent most of their married years living in the Rogers District and Rossburn area. 

Nellie and Bill were blessed with three children:  David, Dolores and Darwin.

Times were tough and Nellie worked hard, milking cows, raising chickens and ducks, selling cottage cheese and planting large gardens to provide for her family.

In 1992 Bill and Nellie retired and moved into the Town of Rossburn.

After Bill’s passing, Nellie kept busy and became well known for her bake sales.  With the help of her sister and sister-in-law, they would make at least 60 pies along with homemade bread, noodles and sweet treats.  All of which would sell out in a short time.

Her determination had her overcome several health issues throughout her life including cancer which she overcame at age 62.

Nellie was a devoted member of the Rossburn Sacred Heart of Jesus Ukrainian Catholic Church.  She often volunteered her time in the kitchen and later in life making perogies. 

Over the past couple of years, Nellie’s health was failing.  She was so fortunate to have her daughter Dolores devote all hours of the day and night to attend to her every need.  With the support of her family, Dolores became the caregiver enabling Nellie to stay in her own home until just a couple months ago.

Nellie was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents, Mike and Mary, brother Walter, sister Rose Yaskiw and grandson David Saley.  She is survived by her children, David (Wendy), Dolores (Jim) Saley, Darwin (Nadine), eight grandchildren; Kerri, Kristen, Devin, Derek, Brittany, Jayln, Braiden, Brendon, 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, sister in law Elsie (Gapka) Kiez and good friend Josie.

The family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to the staff at the Hamiota Health Centre for the care and compassion shown to us and to our mom.  To Shauna and staff at Rae’s Funeral Service for your professionalism, Father Jay Korbin for the beautiful service and Adele for cantoring.  A special thank you to Father Mykhaylo for the visits you made to see Nellie and for the many prayers.
