Selma was born February 2, 1931, to Joe and Jennie Johnson. The eldest of 6 children. She grew up on the farm near 18 Lake. She attended Hilltop School. Selma worked as a nanny for a few families as well as doing housekeeping and cooking. Selm then met and married Gordon Skoglund July 2, 1949, at the Hilltop Baptist Church. Together they built a family farm. They had 3 children, Elliot, Craig and Susan.
In the early 1970’s Selma began working as a Health Care Aide at the Erickson Nursing Unit and was very excited to be able to work in the new Erickson District Health Centre till her retirement at age 65.
Selma enjoyed going to church, going to church programs at Hilltop and Erickson Lutheran, curling, community clubs (WI, Hilltop Ladies Club, Hospital Auxiliary) gardening and travelling in later years. She rarely sat idle. Always busy, sewing, knitting, cleaning, working in the flower beds and garden. She always enjoyed meeting new people and learning all about them.
Selma enjoyed having her grandchildren visit. She always had either ginger snap cookies or cornflake cookies for them to snack on. She enjoyed playing board games with them. Shew as so proud of each of their accomplishments. Selma continued living on the farm and being very busy after Gordon died (July 6, 1998).
Selma met and married her second husband Edgar Salway August 8, 2009. They enjoyed spending winters in Victoria BC and coming back to Manitoba in the summer to spend time at the cabin in Sandy Lake, Manitoba. They enjoyed having company and entertaining. In 2014 Selma and Ed bought a house in Erickson and lived there till 2018. Unfortunately, due to Alzheimer's, Selma went to live at the Country Meadows Care Home in Neepawa, Manitoba until her passing April 5, 2025.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Country Meadows Care Home for all their wonderful care and kindness shown to our mother. Thank you also to the Palliative Care for sitting with our mother during the nights. It meant so much to know that she wasn’t alone.
