Steve Chuhai, age 92, of Rossburn, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on April 27th, 2023 at the Russell Health Centre.
Steve was born on February 17th, 1931 in Rossburn, Manitoba. He grew up on the farm and attended school until grade 8. He met Elizabeth Shwaluk and married on October 22, 1955. They moved to Balmertown, Ontario. Steve was employed by Red Lake Mines and operated the elevator. Then, they moved back to the Rossburn area to farm, and he later worked at Monarch Building Supplies. They were married for 67 years.
He was an active member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rossburn. He served on the church board as president and was later the coordinator of the church cemetery.
Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and berry picking. He loved spending quality time with family and friends and attended many activities that his family participated in. He took pride in cutting his own wood and piling it in his own way.
Steve is survived by his wife Elizabeth Chuhai and daughter Beverly Szymesko (Larry) and son Lorne; his sister Stella Prokopchuk; his grandchildren Jannalee Edgar (Grant) and Erin Szymesko; his great-grandchildren Paige and Anna Edgar. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents John and Mary Chuhai; his brothers Richard Chuhai and Edward Chuhai; his sister Helen Ostash; his brothers-in-law Harry Ostash, Bill Shwaluk, and Arthur Gryjack; sisters-in-law Nellie Gryjack (Shwaluk), Tonzie Chuhai (Kuch).
He received great care from the staff at the Russell Health Centre and the family would like to thank the staff there. We are grateful for your care and kindness shown towards Steve.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
