SYLVIA ANNE YARISH (nee Siwicky)
On December 14th, 2023 our Mother, Grandmother and mother-in-law, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of one hundred years, two months and 17 days. She lived a long, full, interesting life, witnessing many changes over the years. She was born, went to school and lived in Oakburn most of her life.
When WWII broke out, she went to Fort William to help with the war effort, riveting Hawker Hurricane airplanes together. After the war, she returned to Oakburn where she met Joseph Yarish. They were married November 10th, 1951 in a United church in Winnipeg. They had two daughters, Joy and Karen in Shoal Lake Hospital. Once the girls were a little older, Sylvia began working casually at the Oakburn Post Office. She eventually became the Post Master. After about 25 years on the job, she retired from the Post Office, just before computers became part of the job. She then enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, baking, going for walks, playing Bingo and visiting neighbours.
She enjoyed her home, where she was born, until a fall required her to move to transitional care in Morley House. She wanted to be in the PCH in Shoal Lake, to be close to Oakburn. We celebrated Sylvia's 95th birthday in Morley House where she enjoyed the company of the residents and the great staff. She felt at home, and thanks to caring staff, felt safe and well cared for. She said she didn't have to worry about anything. She even said that it would be a good place for us to stay!
Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Joe Yarish and four siblings, Walter, Mary, Olga and Ron. She leaves to mourn her passing, Joy (Allan), Karen, grandson Toban, grand daughters, Tyra (Jeff), Taryn (Mark), an older sister Jean (in Ottawa) and many other relatives.
Allan says “She was the best mother-in-law ever!”
We love you, Mama.
