William Piett Obituary

WILLIAM (Bill) ROBERT PIETT March 22, 1931 - December 12, 2023

Bill was born in Quill Lake, SK and lived there till the age of 9 when his family moved to Newdale, MB.  From an early age he was energetic and athletic.  His love for sports; mainly hockey, baseball and curling overtook his love for learning and he left school part way through grade 10.  This decision he later learned to regret.  An after-school job with the local grocer in Newdale proved to foreshadow the path his life would take.  In 1951 he was back in Quill Lake to play ball for the summer.  During these months he met the love of his life, Leila Foster and they were married on November 14, 1951.  He began working for his father-in-law at his grocery store and in April of 53, their first daughter, Brenda was born.  In 1954 they moved to Onanole to assist his parents in the Vernonflo Hotel.  In 1956 he found employment with RMNP as a store man and their second daughter, Jackie was born.  He resigned from the government in 1969 when he became self-employed working with Investors.  In 1976 he purchased the Clear Lake Trading Post and in 1979 he purchased H.R. Paulsen Insurance in Erickson.  Both businesses stayed in the family; each being owned by his daughters and their husbands.

In 1976 Bill was blessed with the first of 6 granddaughters and thus began his new role as “Popa” He cherished his new title and could be found anywhere from umping ball games and golfing to writing poems of grandfather wisdom “be good, work hard, have fun”.  Bill took to retirement with ease and enjoyed his home in Onanole during their summers and Texas during winters.  Bill fell in love with and excelled at floor shuffling even holding the title as “World Champion” for a year.  Shuffling introduced Bill to many new friends and places.  He competed across Canada and the USA as well as represented Canada in international tournaments in Japan and Australia.  He was a good teacher of the sport and met many wonderful friends whom he held near and dear throughout his years.  A very special group of friends who he affectionately referenced as his “adopted daughters” helped him enjoy a few bonus winters down south in his last couple years.  He was a legend in our lives and a mentor to many in curling and shuffling.  In 2001 they sold their home in Onanole and found a new retirement community in Brandon, Manitoba.  After 57 years of marriage, he lost Leila in 2008 and moved back home to Erickson, Manitoba where he would stay.

His 6 granddaughters were the light of his life and fondly referred to as "Billie’s Angels".  He was known to say many times, "I've yet to meet a man strong enough to be a woman".

He was predeceased by his parents, Vern and Flo Piett, his sister, Gwen Lawrence, his wife Leila Piett and his daughter Brenda Piett.

He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter Jackie (Ken) Greavett, and granddaughters Daina (Eric) Boudreau, Toni (Ryan) Andreychuk, Stacy Greavett, Kylie Zachedniak, Jasmin Greavett (Jay), and Quinn Greavett (Bryden) along with his 9 great-grandchildren, Noah, Zolie, Alexis, Tessa, Sloan, Layla, Jake, Maddi and Sadie. Nephews Rob, Kelvin and niece Wendy.

When you hear Paul Anka's song "MY WAY", think of Bill.
